Riverline Market Hall is a 90-metre steel shed on the west bank of the Chicago River, a covered market by day and an event hall at night. One roof of weathering steel trusses spans the floor without columns, with tall north glazing toward the water and a timber deck that steps down to the riverwalk.

The trusses were fabricated in Indiana and scanned twice, once in the yard and once after they were lifted. The second scan found the fourth truss sitting 7 millimetres off its bearing line, well inside tolerance, so it was logged and left. The harder lesson came in the first winter: 174 sensors showed the north doors losing more heat than the whole glazed wall, so a vestibule was added before the second season and heating fell by a fifth.

  1. L01Lesson learnedScan long-span trusses in the yard, where a correction still costs nothing.
  2. L02Lesson learnedOne open door lost more heat than 600 square metres of glass.
  3. L03Lesson learnedA second winter of data was worth more than any energy model at design stage.
